Violence Amid PSG Champions League Celebrations in France

Two Dead, Shops Looted After PSG UEFA Champions League Win

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) achieved a monumental milestone by securing their first-ever UEFA Champions League title with a commanding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. While the triumph was a cause for celebration among fans, the ensuing festivities across France took a tragic turn, resulting in fatalities, numerous injuries, and widespread disturbances.

Tragic Incidents Amid Celebrations

The jubilant atmosphere was overshadowed by two separate fatal incidents. In the southwestern town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy lost his life after being stabbed during street celebrations. Meanwhile, in Paris, a 23-year-old man died following a collision while riding a scooter amidst the revelry. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding both deaths.

Widespread Violence and Arrests

The celebrations escalated into violent clashes, particularly in Paris. Notable incidents included the setting off of flares and fireworks, vandalism of public property, and the torching of vehicles. Law enforcement agencies reported 559 arrests nationwide, with 491 occurring in the capital. Additionally, 192 individuals sustained injuries, including 22 police officers and seven firefighters.

In a particularly severe incident, a police officer in Coutances was critically injured by fireworks and is currently in a coma.

Looting and Property Damage

Amid the chaos, several shops were looted, notably a Foot Locker store on the Champs-Élysées, where approximately 30 individuals were apprehended. Emergency services responded to numerous fires, including 264 vehicle fires, and instances of property damage were reported throughout the city.

Official Responses and Security Measures

Paris police prefect Laurent Nuñez condemned the violence, emphasizing that such acts were perpetrated by individuals intent on causing disruption rather than genuine fans. He announced that PSG’s victory parade would proceed as planned, albeit with heightened security measures, including increased police and military presence.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau also denounced the rioters, referring to them as “barbarians,” and called for stringent actions against those responsible.

Calls for Peaceful Celebrations

In light of the disturbances, PSG players, including Ousmane Dembélé, appealed to fans to celebrate responsibly and avoid destructive behavior. The club’s historic win remains a significant achievement, marking them as the second French club to clinch the Champions League title, following Marseille’s victory in 1993.

As France reflects on the duality of this landmark sporting achievement and the subsequent unrest, authorities and community leaders are urging for unity and peaceful celebrations in future events.
