LAFC qualify for CWC

LAFC Secures Final Berth in CWC with 2-1 Win Over Club America

In a dramatic showdown at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, LAFC secured the last berth in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by defeating Mexico’s Club América 2-1 after extra time. The match, held on May 31, 2025, was a high-stakes playoff to determine the final entrant in the expanded 32-team tournament.

Match Highlights

The game remained goalless in the first half, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to convert. In the 62nd minute, Club América took the lead through a penalty converted by former LAFC player Brian Rodríguez, following a VAR-reviewed foul by Mark Delgado on Erick Sánchez.

LAFC responded with relentless pressure, and their efforts paid off in the 89th minute when Igor Jesus scored his first goal for the club, heading in from a corner to level the score.

The match proceeded to extra time, where Denis Bouanga emerged as the hero. In the 115th minute, Bouanga’s deflected shot found the back of the net, securing LAFC’s victory and a place in the Club World Cup.

Road to the Club World Cup

LAFC’s qualification came after Club León was disqualified from the tournament due to a breach of FIFA’s ownership rules, which prohibit multiple clubs under the same ownership group from participating.

With this win, LAFC joins Group D in the Club World Cup, alongside Chelsea (England), Flamengo (Brazil), and Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia). Their group stage matches are scheduled as follows:

  • June 16: vs. Chelsea in Atlanta
  • June 20: vs. Espérance de Tunis in Nashville
  • June 24: vs. Flamengo in Orlando
